Take Her Favour, 2009 by Steech Simon Moore sounds a lot like Kind Of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett - not only in terms of voice but also in the way they both handle the guitar like masters without making a big display of it. I was talking to Mr. Moore about this one day and found he didn't even know it. While the Kind of Like Spitting reference begins as a starting point for understanding the music of Kentucky Nightmare, the latter has a much more country-Western take on style and a much more positive outlook on life and love. Take Her Favour is a hard record to describe: It's not quite alt-country, but not quite indie rock, and it sounds nothing at all like anything else I've ever heard from Bloomington. It does, however, feel like perfect music for times when the weather is a little cool. It was good music to fall asleep in the chair to while my wife dipped caramel apples in the kitchen last night. It also has the added benefit of being something like a regional secret. I do not think they get outside the Midwest very often. I was able to catch them as they passed through en route to SXSW earlier this year. So, they could easily be the next big band that we can all claim we knew first.
